What is “Why weight to talk?”
There are considerable barriers to engaging children and families about healthier weight. Not only do practitioners report they do not know how best to discuss healthier weight, but they also struggle to signpost into services for further support.
This is compounded by children and families lived experience of weight stigma – in other words, prejudice, and discrimination they face on a daily basis because they are living with overweight or obesity – and this can affect how they engage with services.
“Why weight to talk?” is a training programme designed to enable frontline practitioners to deliver effective brief advice to children and families on healthier weight and signpost them to further support where appropriate.
The training builds capacity in frontline practitioners to deliver this brief advice in a trauma-informed manner – that is, an approach that is considerate of the challenges children and families face around poverty and food insecurity, weight stigma, and the cost-of-living crisis.
The training explores:
- The causes of overweight and obesity, and how where we live, what we do for work, and our level of education can impact our health and wellbeing.
- Weight stigma as an adverse experience that both children and adults can suffer and how the stress generated from this prejudice can make it even harder to make healthier choices.
- How to deliver effective, compassionate, brief advice to children and families to provide guidance that is best suited to their needs and circumstances.
- What support is available locally, including weight management services as well as other local opportunities offered by the third sector and other partners.
